“ t.A.T.u “ Russian
girls group
" t.A.T.u. " Russian girls group was formed in the beginning of 2000 by a script writer and director Ivan Shapovalov. For the next two years Ivan Shapovalov was the producer of " t.A.T.u. " The group has tremendous success.
In Russian language " t.A.T.u. " means the same as " tattoo " in English, though the " t.A.T.u. " group has nothing to do with real tatoo. In Russian spelling the group was often called as " Taty ". Even the very first official web site of the group in Russia has the domain name www.taty.ru. But later the domain was changed to www.tatu.ru. Their first occurrence in Russia was held in the popular TV program of "12 Spiteful Spectators" on MTV-Russia (10/13/2000).
The group includes two girls: Lena and Yulia. Lena Katina was born on October, 4, 1984, and her dream was to become the economist. She told journalists about that at the beginning of her musical career. In recent interviews Lena says that her childish dreams always were to become a singer. Looks like to be true. Lena's farther is well-known Russian musician.
Yulia Volkova was born on February, 20, 1985. After graduating from 9 class she entered in the State Musical School. Lena and Yulia in the childhood participated in children's group "Fidget". 14 year old Yulia was expelled from that group after a scandal and for " unworthy behavior and depravity of collective ". Nobody could find out what really happened.
When Ivan Shapovalov announced casting to selected singers for his new girls project " t.A.T.u. ", Lena and Yulia came together among other 500 pretenders. Each of them won that competition independently from each other, and they were selected as participants of a new " t.A.T.u. " group.
The hit of the group which have made "t.A.T.u. " famous all over Russia was not written by professionals. The text of the song "Ya Soshla S Uma" (" All The Things She Said ") was written by Elena Kiper, the journalist of NTV Channel and co-producer of " t.A.T.u. ", and Valery Polienko, student of Moscow Theatre Institute (VGIK). For shootings a clip on this composition Lena Katina had to grow thin almost on 20 lbs, and Yulia Volkova had to make a short hairstyle and to paint hair in black color.
Both the clip and the song made scandalous success that has allowed " t.A.T.u. " to win the leading positions in the Russian charts. The girls duet has caused huge interest which long time was supported by artificial full absence of the information on singers, and their permanent refusal to communicate with press.
Before the first Russian album of the " t.A.T.u. " group appeared, the girls lets out a single "Ya Soshla S Uma " (All The Things She Said) and on the spot is going to write down the English version of their first hit. Producer Ivan Shapovalov informed that the girls are studing English. In 2001 the debut album " 200 on a passer " (200 Km/h in the Wrong Way) appeared as well as the next clip on the song " They're Not Gonna Get Us ".
In same time the " t.A.T.u. "group has conflict to Sergey Galoyan, the 19-years composer of some songs of duet. Mr.Galoyan considered some of his copyrights were broken. However, soon the conflict was settled.
Autumn of 2001 - a new scandal. The clip on a song of " 30 minutes " which again has excited consciousness of inhabitants has left. Many musical programs and TV channels refused rotation of that clip. But under pressure of popularity of " t.A.T.u. " at spectators the scandalous clip has appeared on most major TV Channels.
